The clarinet is a very versatile instrument and is great if you would like to play both classical and jazz music, join an orchestra, wind band, or marching band. It’s smaller and lighter than the saxophone, which makes it easier for younger children to learn, although it still requires good breath control, so for very young children, we would recommend starting with the recorder.
