Leo Moreland
Guitar
Senior Teacher
Leo, a guitarist and composer from Brixton, started playing guitar at 9 and has practiced daily since. Music has always been central in his life; he's played in bands since year 6, playing rock covers, folk originals, R&B classics, and jazz standards, as well as composing and making electronic music since he was 12.
While studying jazz guitar at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, he won the Phil Miller Solo Guitar prize and reached the semifinals of BBC’s Young Jazz Musician of the Year, while gigging frequently as a bandleader and collaborator. He has learned from top UK jazz guitarists like David Preston, Chris Montague, and Ant Law, and studied classical guitar with Joseph Warwick and Mark Ashford. Currently, he leads a quartet with some of the finest improvising musicians of his generation as well as being a valued member of other jazz groups.
Leo has taught since leaving sixth form in 2018, developing a holistic, student-centric approach that fosters a love of music. He teaches all styles and grade syllabi, specialising in jazz and classical. He helps students improve by recognising their strengths and finding simple and enjoyable ways to tackle challenges.
