Sophie – Cello and Piano

Sophie English

Sophie English grew up in Suffolk before moving to London to pursue her musical career.  Although she did not begin playing the cello until the age of eight, her earliest memories are of being surrounded by instruments in her grandfather’s (Dietrich Kessler) workshop.

Sophie is a graduate of Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. She studied with Joely Koos and has participated in masterclasses with Alexander Baille, Naomi Butterworth and Timothy Walden. Highlights include being principle cellist for Trinity Sinfonia and winning the Sir John Barbirolli prize with the Sautinne Quartet.

Sophie regularly performs in both commercial and orchestral settings and has played with artists including Sam Smith and Jess Glynne. Other projects have included work with UK based outfit Passport to Stockholm that has seen collaborations with Sony and the latest advert for the HTC One. Sophie’s most recent performance work includes playing for the premiere of West End based musical Lost Boy and recording a session for the band Phoria at Abbey Road Studios. She is passionate about finding ways to combine orchestral soundscapes with popular art forms. Away from London, Sophie acts as Music Director for BNatural festival in Suffolk.
